Just north of Vargas Island we spotted a grey whale feeding. We stopped the boat and while we were dead in the water the whale came closer towards us. There was a fog out at sea, and we decided to stay with this whale. The decision turned out very well. At one point the whale swam underneath the boat and surfaced just at the other side. The wind was toward us, and when it surfaced the spray of its blow was all over us. An amazing experience.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janvantwillert/3641346207/" title="DSC06944 Grey Whale Blowholes by Jenny & Jan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3368/3641346207_bd2699b370_m.jpg" width="240" height="161" alt="DSC06944 Grey Whale Blowholes" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janvantwillert/3641345707/" title="DSC06932 by Jenny & Jan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2078/3641345707_82621940c1_m.jpg" width="240" height="161" alt="DSC06932" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janvantwillert/3641344445/" title="DSC06921 by Jenny & Jan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2467/3641344445_3e6df89268_m.jpg" width="240" height="161" alt="DSC06921" /></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janvantwillert/3642151244/" title="DSC06914 Sprayed by a grey whale by Jenny & Jan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3304/3642151244_4f793b7eb3_m.jpg" width="240" height="161" alt="DSC06914 Sprayed by a grey whale" /></a><br /><br /><object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/He42RZzAL6Y&hl=nl&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/He42RZzAL6Y&hl=nl&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>Janhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00106629761591242577noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12840120.post-23242932778694168942007-12-09T19:57:00.000+01:002007-12-24T15:55:34.086+01:00OrcaDate : Sunday December 9th 2007<br />Location : Tysfjord, Norway<br />Position : 68-13N 15-50E<br />Species : Killer whale <em>Orcinus orca</em>, <br />Total number seen : 6-8 orcas <br /><br />Remarks<br />From Bognes today. The weather today was really nice, almost no wind and beautiful sky! Just before Tiltvika,a few nautical miles west of Tysnes we saw a herring boat in the horizon, lets go there and check it out maybe the orcas are around. Suddenly we saw orcas just in front of the Leonora, 6-8 individuals and with a little calf. They where identified as the NG's. It seemed like they were on their way to the herring boat as well. Later we saw that they were cleaning their fishing nets. - Maybe they recognized the sound of the fishing nets going in to the water from the herring boat, Per Ole said. That probably is the case because they had the course set straight towards the boat and when they got there they were swimming around the net and eating. There where also a lot of seagulls feeding as well as a few sea eagles and there were also a lot of behavior- spy hoping, tailslaping and also sleeping! <br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janvantwillert/2117014815/" title="DSC03284 091207 by Jenny & Jan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2367/2117014815_ae942a768d_m.jpg" width="240" height="161" alt="DSC03284 091207" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janvantwillert/2117792664/" title="DSC03286 091207 by Jenny & Jan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2215/2117792664_51403ecb62_m.jpg" width="240" height="161" alt="DSC03286 091207" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janvantwillert/2117015397/" title="DSC03316 091207 by Jenny & Jan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2031/2117015397_f3019b4118_m.jpg" width="240" height="161" alt="DSC03316 091207" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janvantwillert/2117015489/" title="DSC03318 091207 by Jenny & Jan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2149/2117015489_ba45f1afe9_m.jpg" width="240" height="161" alt="DSC03318 091207" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janvantwillert/2117794350/" title="DSC03353 091207 by Jenny & Jan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2378/2117794350_af333e8290_m.jpg" width="240" height="161" alt="DSC03353 091207" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janvantwillert/2117016947/" title="DSC03358 091207 by Jenny & Jan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2329/2117016947_b2534d6faa_m.jpg" width="240" height="161" alt="DSC03358 091207" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janvantwillert/2117017049/" title="DSC03359 091207 by Jenny & Jan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2227/2117017049_92ca5a43b1_m.jpg" width="240" height="161" alt="DSC03359 091207" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janvantwillert/2117017243/" title="DSC03366 091207 by Jenny & Jan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2164/2117017243_185fe2dec9_m.jpg" width="240" height="161" alt="DSC03366 091207" /></a><br /><br /><object width="425" height="350"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9JovElxps68"> </param> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9JovElxps68" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350"> </embed> </object>Janhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00106629761591242577noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12840120.post-34706189029003495552007-12-08T23:33:00.000+01:002007-12-23T08:05:02.739+01:00OrcaDate : Saturday December 8th 2007<br />Location : Tysfjord, Norway<br />Position : 68-19N 15-55E<br />Species : Killer whale <em>Orcinus orca</em>, <br />Total number seen : 9 orcas <br /><br />Remarks:<br />Per Ole, the captain of the Leonora said that a big research boat have whales just 4 nautical miles away west of Barøya but they were traveling toward Ofotsffjorden very fast. Yesterday the orcas where seen near the Lofoten Islands, so they moved the boat to Skutvik. If the orcas are still around, it wouldn't be such a long time to get there. When we had left the harbour the message arrived that the orcas where seen near Tysfjord! That was two hours away with the Leonora. The zodiacs went out in front of us to find the orcas and we would follow.<br />We found the orcas in the Vestfjord, close to the lighthouse of Tranøy. It was a group of 5 or 6 orcas with 2 big males. They were swimming very fast in the direction of the Lofoten Islands. They where porpoising on the waves, a way of travelling we have only seen by transients orcas in British Columbia.<br />Because they where swimming so fast in opposite direction of the zodiacs, they unfortunately never saw the orcas today.<br /><br /><object width="425" height="350"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/igMMBI854Gg"> </param> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/igMMBI854Gg" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350"> </embed> </object><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janvantwillert/2110483388/" title="DSC02875 by Jenny & Jan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2072/2110483388_4dc257432f_m.jpg" width="240" height="161" alt="DSC02875" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janvantwillert/2109706603/" title="DSC02876 by Jenny & Jan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2262/2109706603_d08c7edde2_m.jpg" width="240" height="161" alt="DSC02876" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janvantwillert/2110483152/" title="DSC02881 by Jenny & Jan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2278/2110483152_76758636d0_m.jpg" width="240" height="161" alt="DSC02881" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janvantwillert/2110482942/" title="DSC02892 by Jenny & Jan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2175/2110482942_55ff6be781_m.jpg" width="240" height="161" alt="DSC02892" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janvantwillert/2109706207/" title="DSC02927 by Jenny & Jan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2016/2109706207_986bc209f7_m.jpg" width="240" height="161" alt="DSC02927" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janvantwillert/2110482814/" title="DSC02938 by Jenny & Jan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2222/2110482814_a04c1a8409_m.jpg" width="240" height="161" alt="DSC02938" /></a><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janvantwillert/2109705967/" title="DSC02951 by Jenny & Jan, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2041/2109705967_d557ce018a_m.jpg" width="240" height="161" alt="DSC02951" /></a><br /><br />In the early morning at 00.30 hrs the Northernlight was stunning. With my cell phone I checked the comments of OL to find out if there where any whales in the area.<br />OL reported that there where Transients in Johnstone Strait and the Resident groups (A8s, A11s, A30s and I15s) where east of the Robson Bight. That looks promising.<br />From Telegraph we headed east and soon we spotted the Transients. The group consist of one male and two females. We lost the male and female very quickly and Wayne, the captain of the Lukwa, decided to follow the other female. She was in a hurry and headed west with a speed of 9 knots to Weynton Passage. She was also calling and mimicking the distinctive call of the I15s. We followed the whale for a while and suddenly she splashed her tail ones and breached directly after that. Then she headed west again with high speed. Onboard of the Lukwa we thought the whale was T2. At Weynton Passage we left the whale and we went north through Weynton Passage into Blackfish Sound. We saw no more whales that day.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janvantwillert/48333803/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://static.flickr.com/27/48333803_42f6a26c30_m.jpg" width="240" height="140" alt="T2" /></a><br />Transient T2Janhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00106629761591242577noreply@blogger.com0
